Nick attended a military course where a portion of the course was dedicated to the military’s organization of the physical things that make the world go ’round.
The Classes of Supply
Class I is rations, food, etc. Class II is clothing and equipment. Class III is POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants). Class IV is construction materials. Class V is ammunition, fuses, bombs. Class VII is major end items. Class VIII is medical supplies. Class IX is repair parts. Class X is miscellaneous, civil affairs support/agricultural and economic development.
Did you notice we skipped Class VI? Officially, this is known as ‘personal demand items’. One of the best jokes in the military is Class VI: anyone who has ever visited a military base knows the Class VI store is the base liquor store.
During this presentation of the Classes of Supply, one enterprising sergeant raised his hand and asked, “What about water?” The instructor sergeant replied, “water is so damn important, it doesn’t get a class of supply”.
