Lessons Learned

“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”
William Shakespeare

Here are short and sweet lessons we learned along the way!

Roads

  • When building a gravel road from scratch, put down the bigger gravel first, because the smaller gravel sinks into the mud. We had 20 tons of small gravel poured about 100′ long and it completely disappeared in a couple of seasons.

Solar Ovens

  • The solar oven gets really hot, even when the outside air temps are in the 60’s/70’s, and you can really scorch food in bright sunlight.
  • The solar oven needs to be bolted down so the wind doesn’t flip your food to share with mother earth.

Organization

  • When your round trip time to and from the site is two hours, you really need to be organized about what to bring there, what to bring back, food, water, keys, wallet, and the like. See our post on This Trip, Next Trip for how we solved this problem.
